A Matatu Ride in Nairobi City

Nairobi, Kenya

Experience hosted by Virginia

2 hours, Hosted in English and Swahili

What you'll do

Having said that the fancy Buses are not found in every bus stage in the city, we shall start by going to the stage where they are found. We have several bus stations with this kind of buses but we shall stick to Pipeline/Embakasi Bus station which has new buses on the road now and then.
We shall start our itenary from 11am to 1pm when there is no much traffic on the roads. Pipeline/Embakasi bus station is right opposite the National Archives therefore you can be dropped at the national archives by your designated driver or an uber. i shall pick you up and we head right to the bus station.
The buses usually queue there as passengers board. we shall have a look at all the fancy ones, take photos, get inside to have a look and even ask questions in that regard. That will take around 15min. we shall then board one of them, the best of them all and wait for it to fill up so we can ride with it around town. As we ride, if the loud music won't be too loud i shall give a brief history of the Matatus.
The ride will take approximately 20 min, therefore we shall alight at some point and take another one back to the city. That will be another 20min therefore the whole experience will take about an hour.
Having experienced that, we shall take a 10min walk to the iconic KICC building where we shall take some photos.
Other things to note
Come dressed in casual sporty.

Hi, my name is Virginia, from Nairobi, born and raised. I am fun loving, sociable, fearless and a real local. I will host a Matatu experience and a complementary visit to the iconic KICC( Kenyatta International Conference Centre) for some selfies. KICC building is monumental and has a sculpture of the 1st Kenyan president. It is our "Statue of liberty" in New york or "Eiffel tower" in Paris. I will share with you the evolution of matatus(city public transport) since they started, so look forward to hear the stories. They are available in the city but carry people to towns around the city. The fanciest matatus have state of the art graffiti, TV screens, music systems and great people. If you wish to have this experience with me it will be unforgettable since it's unique and only available in Nairobi City.

Where you'll be

The experience will start at a bus station but i will pick you up outside The Hilton Hotel and walk there. It shall be at Embakasi/pipeline bus station. But since we shall be on wheels, feeling and experiencing the rides, we shall move from the city centre to a place called City Stadium and back to the City centre. We shall then walk to the iconic KICC. The building is monumental and has a sculpture of the 1st Kenyan president.

Public transport in Nairobi can be a bit overwhelming to tourists but Virginia provided helpful guidance and recommendations. She let us pick what appealed to us and our trip was very personalized. Virginia was also very flexible and extended our experience when public transport proved to be unreliable and we found a creative but possibly more unique solution. Virginia also proved to have a wide variety of knowledge about Nairobi and Kenya which was great to have at the KICC. I would recommend her guidance.

It's a fun adventure around town! The matatu ride was like a party bus, and we got some great views from KICC. :)
